Overview

Periodically, Windows 7, 8, 10, and Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012 R2 check the hardware configuration of the computer on which the operating system is installed. If the operating system detects that the hardware has changed substantially, reactivation is required. The actual weighting factors and threshold values vary, because these values must keep pace with the constantly evolving computer hardware market. KMS clients focus on hard disk changes to determine the need for reactivation.

Client activations are valid for 180 days—a period is called the activation validity interval. To remain activated, KMS clients must renew their activation by connecting to the KMS host at least once every 180 days. By default, KMS client computers attempt to renew their activation every seven days. After a client’s activation is renewed, the activation validity interval begins again.

In order to re-activate Windows or Office when away from campus, you must use the VPN.

This guide will help you (re)activate the SU volume-licensed version of Microsoft Office. Your office installation can become "deactivated" if your computer is out of contact with the campus network for a significant amount of time, as it cannot communicate with the campus's licensing server.

Procedure

  1. If off campus, connect to the SU VPN using the SURA utility.

  2. Click on the start menu.

  3. In the search box, type "cmd" without quotes.

  4. Right-click on cmd.exe in the search results and select "Run as Administrator" from the menu.

  5. If prompted, type the username and/or password for your administrator account.

  6. Use the "cd" command to change to one of the following directories, depending on your version of Office:
    1. Office 2010 – cd "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14"
    2. Office 2013cd "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15"
    3. Office 2016 - cd "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16"
  7. Type the following command:
    1. "cscript ospp.vbs /act" – without quotes, and press Enter.

  8. Verify that the procedure worked by checking the Office activation page.
