What is QAM?

According to WikipediaQAM stands for "quadrature amplitude modulation, the format by which digital cable channels are encoded and transmitted via cable television providers." Simply put, a QAM tuner allows you to pull in many digital and HD cable channels without the use of a set-top box.

Most, but not all, TVs made after 2006 have a built-in QAM tuner.

Your TV’s owner’s manual should have model-specific information about whether or not there is a QAM tuner in your TV.  The TV manufacturer’s website (partial list below) may provide this information. You can also search online by make/model of your TV to see if it has a QAM tuner.

An example of what the manual may say if the TV has a QAM tuner:

  • “Built-in digital tuner (ATSC/Clear QAM)”, or “NTSC/QAM“
  • Additionally, if your TV remote has the (.) or (-) symbol button for easy tuning or can display channels such as 5.2 or 5-2, your TV probably has a QAM tuner.

An example of what the manual may say if the TV does NOT have a QAM tuner:

  • “ATSC / NTSC Tuner” (there will be no mention of QAM)
