Problem Overview

  • You are changing your email address and would like email from your listserv lists sent to your new address.
  • You have changed your email address and either you are not receiving email from your listserv lists, or you are unable to send email to your listserv lists, or both.

Solution

The procedure is described for two situations:

  • Your old email address is still active
  • Your old email address is no longer active

Note: wherever you see the word 'listname', such as in listname@listserv.syr.edu below, substitute the actual list name. For example, for list 'clocks', you would use clocks@listserv.syr.edu.

Your Old Email Address Is Still Active

  1. If you are unsure of all the lists you are subscribed to, send the command 'query *' to listserv@listserv.syr.edu  from your old email account to determine what local lists you are subscribed to. These are lists that are hosted at Listserv. (If you know all the lists you are subscribed to you may skip this step.)
  2. From your old email account, change your lists.
  • If the list is local (and for some global lists), send email to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu.
    1. Delete the signature line if it is included automatically.
    2. Include the following line in the body of the message:
      change listname newaddress
For example, if the listname is "clocks" and your new address is newaddr@syr.edu, the command will be "change clocks newaddr@syr.edu".
    3. You will receive a confirmation email; once you respond to the confirmation, the change will take effect.
    4. If you want to do all lists at once, use the command "change * newaddress".
  • If the list is hosted at a different site, send the request to: listserv@xxxxxx.edu
    1. xxxxxxx.edu is the name of the site that hosts the list.
    2. Include similar wording in the body of the message as for local lists in the preceding section.
    3. There is no command analogous to the query command for lists hosted at different sites, or for global lists. If you are unsure of them, your only recourse is to check old email messages received from the lists.

Your Old Email Address Is No Longer Active

  1. Contact the list owner for each list and request that your old email address be removed from the list.
    1. The owner of any list can be reached by sending email to: listname-request@listserv.syr.edu For example, for a list called "clocks", the list owner can be reached by sending email to clocks-request@listserv.syr.edu.
  2. From your new email account, subscribe to each list that you would like to continue receiving. Send email to listserv@listserv.syr.edu, and in the body of the email type the command:
    subscribe listname
For example, for the list "clocks", the command will be "subscribe clocks".

Help

List owners are responsible for all questions from list members

  • List members should contact their list owner(s) for help at <listname-request@listserv.syr.edu>. For example, if the listname is "clocks", send email to <clocks-request@listserv.syr.edu>. If you need help contacting the owner, please contact the ITS Service Center by email at help@syr.edu or by phone at 315-443-2677.
  • List owners may receive help by sending email to help@syr.edu or contacting the ITS Service Center at 315-443-2677.
