Summary

Digest, or bulk mail delivery, is an optional feature to have messages aggregated by time period and then sent out at the end of that time period. Particularly on active lists, this can avoid "Inbox Clutter". Most digests are setup on a daily or weekly basis, e.g., you receive all postings for the day just after midnight.

Enabling Listserv List Digests

Listserv list owners may request that digests be enabled for their list. List members should contact the list owner with questions about digests or any other questions.

Digests can only be enabled by the Listserv Administration. List owners should send requests for digest enablement to consult@syr.edu. This request should include digest frequency (daily, weekly, monthly). This process only enables digest for the list, but does not enable it for any particular subscribers.

Enabling Digest for Individual Subscribers

  • Digest can automatically be enabled for all NEW suscribers
This can be done by adding the following line to the list configuration
    Default-Options=Digest
  • Individual subscribers can enable or disable their own digest
    • send email to listserv@listserv.syr.edu  with the command
set [software011:listname] digest (e.g., for the list "clocks", <set clocks digest>)
set [software011:listname] mail (to disable digest)
    • Go to http://listserv.syr.edu and use the subscriber interface to manage their subscription.
  • List owners can enable/disable digests for individual list members via the web interface, or by sending the command
    set [software011:listname] digest for [software011:@syr.edu] (e.g., <set clocks digest for joe@syr.edu>)

Notes

  • digests read most easily on lists that have mostly plain text postings.
  • if the list has many attachments, subscribers may want to receive their digests in mime format. This can be done via the web, or by sending the following commands to listserv@listserv.syr.edu:
    • to enable, send
set [software011:listname] mime     e.g., for the list "clocks", <set clocks mime>
    • to disable, send
set [software011:listname] nomime     e.g., for the list "clocks", <set clocks nomime>
