Listserv - Version Changes

A summary of changes between Listserv Versions

Listserv Change from 14.4 to 16.0 (planned!)

See Listserv version 16.0 for further information.

Listserv Changes from 1.8e to 14.4

(Implementation date at Syracuse University: 8/16/2005)

The large difference in version numbers does not mean we skipped major releases, but rather reflect a new numbering scheme. The release numbers are 1.8e->14.3->14.4. 1.8e->14.3 was a mjaor update; 14.3->14.4 a minor one. In general, the major changes were invisible security enhancements. Following are some changes that may be of interest:

Configuration-Owner= list header keyword. This allows for owners that can, for example, manage subscribers but not change list operation

Send=Public,Confirm,Non-Member. This defines a list that allows posting from non-members, but they will be required to confirm their posts.

You can view a more extensive list of 14.3 & 14.4 enhancements online at http://www.lsoft.com/resources/manuals.asp.

Listserv Changes from 1.8d to 1.8e

(Implementation date at Syracuse University: 3/27/04)

Basic functionality and commands changed very little between versions. Users will generally be able to do the same things in the same way as with 1.8d.

There are a number of usability enhancements; most visible is the capability for subscribers to manage their subscriptions from the web. Look for Subscriber's Corner on the main SU Listserv web page.

Listserv now has wizards to help list owners with common list management tasks (look for
the wizards button on the list management page)

Antivirus scanning is included with 1.8e, although we expect to be using Syracuse University's AV scanning as well. Initially, virus emails will be cleaned and forwarded on to the intended list. In the future, we hope to delete virus emails completely. The bottom line is that we will be AV scanning, but the details will be worked out over time.

We will begin spam scanning about the time of the upgrade, although the two are not related (spam scanning is provided through SU's Brightmail anti-spam implementation).
