Office 365 ProPlus

System Requirements

To install Office for Mac 2016, you must have Mac OSX 10.10 or later, at least 4 GB of RAM, and at least 6 GB of free space on the hard drive.    To install Office for Mac 2011, you need Mac OSX 10.6 or later, at least 1GB of RAM, and at least 2.5 GB of free space on the hard drive.  For more details, see the Microsoft page at:  Office system requirements (under the "Office 365 subscription plans" heading select "Office 365 University")

 

Installing Office for Mac 2016 (requires OSX 10.10 or later)

1)  Login into your SU email account at:  sumail.syr.edu (staff and faculty should log into https://portal.office.com) .  If you are prompted to indicate whether this is a "Work or School account" or a "Microsoft Account," select "Work or School Account."

2)  Select the "gear icon" next to your name in the upper right hand corner of the screen

3) Select "Office 365"

4)  Select "Software" and then "Office."  You should now see a screen with the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote icons displayed.

Note that OneNote in Office for Mac 2016 requires OneDrive for storage of files.  SUmail accounts and SU faculty/staff accounts do not include OneDrive.  To use OneNote in Office for Mac 2016, you will need a personal Microsoft account that has OneDrive storage.  If you change the sign-in account used with OneNote software that has been installed with an SU account, you may need to periodically switch the sign-in account back temporarily to the SU account to pass the periodic software license check.  The sign-in account used with OneNote affects the sign-in account for all other Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

5)  Select your preferred language from the list and then select Install.  An installer (.dmg) file will now be downloaded to the Mac (you may be prompted to save the file before the download begins).  The file is large, so it may take a few minutes.

6)  When the download completes, launch the installer by opening the .dmg file that was just downloaded to the folder where you store downloads.  The "Install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac" screen will appear.

7)  The installer will guide you through a series of steps, select "Continue" and "Agree" and then  "Install" (you can change the install location of the software if you wish before you select "Install")  to move through the install process.   You may be prompted to close open browsers or other software, select "Close Application and Install" to continuing installing Office 365 ProPlus.

8)  Office will now begin installing.  The installation make take several minutes. 

9)  When installation is complete, you should see a screen that says "The Installation was Successful."  Select "Close"

 

OneDrive Not Available in Office 365 ProPlus at SU

As you activate/install Office, information about saving to OneDrive may display.  SU accounts do not include OneDrive at this time. 

10)  You now need to activate the Office Installation before you can use the Office applications.  If the "Get Started" screen does not appear automatically, select one of the applications from the dock or the Applications folder.

11)  Select "Sign In"

12)  If prompted to select whether you are using a "Microsoft Account" or a "Work Account," select "Work Account."

13)  You will be prompted for the theme to use for Office (colorful or classic).  Select your preference (you can also change the theme later) and the select "Continue."

14)  You should get a message that you are all set.  Your Office install should now be complete.

 

Installing Office for Mac 2011

1)  Login into your SU email account at:  sumail.syr.edu (SU staff and faculty should log into https://portal.office.com) .  If you are prompted to indicate whether this is a "Work or School account" or a "Microsoft Account" select "Work or School Account."

OneDrive Not Available in Office 365 ProPlus at SU

11)  A "Get Started with Office 2011" screen appears.  Select "Sign in to an existing Office 365 subscription"

12)  Enter your SU email address (netid@syr.edu) when prompted for an email address, and then select "Next"

13)  If you get a screen that says you have more than one account with the same email address, select "Work Account."  
 

14)  Enter your SU email address (netid@syr.edu) and your netid password when asked to sign in to activate Office.  Then select "Sign In."

15)  You will be asked whether you would like Office setup to access your contacts.  Depending on your preference, select "OK" or "Don't Allow"

16)  Enter the information to personalize this copy of Office (first name, last name, and/or Company Name).  Company name is not required.  Then select "Continue"

17)  Select "Yes" when prompted if you would like to keep Office for Mac up to date.  Depending on your preference, select either "Yes" or "No" when asked whether you'd like to join the Customer Experience Improvement Program.

18)  You will now see a screen that says "Congratulations!  You're now ready to use Office for Mac."  Select "Done."

 

Configuring Microsoft Outlook on Mac OS

Please follow the steps provided by Microsoft to configure Microsoft Outlook on Mac OS.

Server Information

Configuration should not require the input of server information. If prompted, however, the server information for SUmail (student, alumni) accounts is outlook.office365.com. For exchange (faculty, staff) accounts it is exchange.syr.edu.
