Panopto for Blackboard (iSchool)

Panopto is best used for recording live video such as during a lecture, or when recording a pre-canned lecture that includes multiple elements such as PowerPoint and software demonstrations. As much of this information already exists on Answers, many of the steps below will include links to other pages.

Login with your SU NetID and password

Record a lecture at your desk using multiple applications

1. Getting Started
  1. Submit a Help Desk ticket to ensure you have the most up to date Panopto software on your computer
  2. Submit a Folder Request Ticket to have a folder created for your course. You will need to include your class number, section number (ie:M001, M800), and the title of your course. 
  3. Download and install the Panopto Recorder (Windows or Mac)
2. Record Your Video

  2. Launch the Panopto Recorder from your desktop
  3. Login with your NetID and Password (your NetID will need to have ad\ in front of it - ad\netid)
  4. Select the correct Course Folder (ex: IST 101) for your video before you record by:
  • Clicking on the huge down arrow on the right side of the screen

        

  • Select the folder by clicking Add New Session to the right of the folder's name
  • Title your video - it will default to the current date and time

        

     5. Click the arrow to return to the recorder

     6. Select all the proper settings

     7. Click Record to begin

            It will take a few seconds to begin recording - the screen will read Starting Devices at first

               

           Make sure the screen says Recording and the Pause button appears before you begin speaking

               

     8. Click Stop when you are finished recording and then click OK when you see a pop-up window

     9. You will be taken to the Recording Status page where you can see your videos upload progress  

               

     10. It is safe to navigate away from this window while uploads are in progress

     11. Once your videos have finished uploading, you are ready to share them on Blackboard

3. Move Recorded Session to Another Folder
  1. Logon to Panopto
  2. Find your session, and click the Settings icon

               

     3.  Under the Folder heading, click the Edit button

               

    4. The folder now turns into a drop-down. Select the new folder, and click Save

               

Record live, in-class lecture

1. Getting Started
  1. Submit a Video Capture Request Ticketfive days prior to the event
    1. Please include: Date, Time, Location and Duration
2. Record Your Video
  1. Login to Panopto with your NetID and password
  2. Before starting the recording, select the proper folder to hold your video
  3. Set Panopto to record, record your lecture, and end the recording when you are finished
  4. If you need assistance during recording, contact the iSchool IT Services Office: 443-4490
  5. Continue to instructions for placing your video in Blacboard (below)

Place Your Video in Blackboard

     1. Login to Blackboard with your NetID and password

     2. Login to Panopto with your NetID and password in a different browser window

              a. If you want to share the video with a specific course, please make sure the video is in your course folder

              b. If you need to change the folder location, follow these instructions

     3. You can view all of your recordings in the main frame, or view specific folders by selecting the folder from the Folders module on the left hand side

     4. There are three options for placing your video in Blackboard - instructions for each are listed below.

               1. Embed one video at a time - will play within the Blackboard frame

               2. Link to one video at a time - will open in a new window

               3. Link to a Panopto Course folder - will share the entire folder with the class.

Option 1 - Embed one video at a time

          1 .Begin in Panopto - Hover over the video you want to share - five icons will appear in the Actions column on the right

          2. Click the share icon - the icon with two people

                   
          3. Select the Outputs option on the side of the window

                             
          4.Scroll down and copy the text in the embed window to paste into Blackboard

                   

          5. Switch to the Blackboard window where you are logged in with your NetID and password and go into your course

          6. Select the content area where you want to place your video (ex: content page, learning module, etc.)

          7. Click Build Content - Item

                  
          8. In the Name text box, give your video a title

          9. Click the HTML button, the text box will open in a new window.

                  
          10. Paste the embed code in the text box

                  

          11. Click Update to exit the window.  The video should now appear in the original text box as a yellow rectangle with a red border.

          12. Click Submit to save the video.

          13. The video will appear in your course and look similar to the below image (if you see a bunch of HTML code instead of the video, you forgot to click the HTML button)

                    

Option 2 - Link to one video at a time

Please Note:  These instructions must be followed, as simply taking the URL from a window or tab where the video is running will cause a dead link.

               1. Begin in Panopto - Hover over the video you want to share - five icons will appear in the Actions column on the right

               2. Click the share icon - the icon with two people        

                     
 
              3. Select the Overview option on the top of the column on the left of the window
       
              4. Copy the URL in the box, called Viewer Link to paste in Blackboard

                    

              5. Switch to the Blackboard window where you are logged in with your NetID and password and go into your course

              6. Select the content area where you want to place your video (ex: content page, learning module, etc.)

              7. Click Build Content - Web Link

                     

              8.  Title your video and paste the URL from Panopto in the URL box

                    

             9. Option #4 will let you chose if you want your link to open in a new window (recommended) or within the Blackboard frame

                   
             10. Click Submit to save

             11. Your Video link will look like the image below and open in a new browser window

                   

Option 3 - Share an entire folder with your class

              1. Select the folder you want to share with your course from the Folder module

                   

             2. Click the Setting icon in the upper right hand corner (this will allow you to edit the settings of an individual folder)

                  

             3. Select the Share option in the left column in the window

             4. If you put your videos into your course folder, your students will be listed below your name at the top of the window

                  

             5. You can also add users by email address or share the URL with anyone you chose

             6. Switch to the Blackboard window where you are logged in with your NetID and password and go into your course

             7. Select the content area where you want to place your video (ex: content page, learning module, etc.)

             8. Click Build Content - Web Link

                   

          9. Title the URL - ex: Course Videos

          10. The URL should be to Panopto - http://coursecast.ischool.syr.edu

                  

          11. Option #4 will let you chose if you want your link to open in a new window (recommended) or within the Blackboard frame

          12. Click Submit to Save

          13. The link to your Video Folder will look like the image below

                  
           14. Students will login with their SU NetID and password - they will see all videos you add to your course folder in Panopto
